Las Vegas Metro police disclosed some details Wednesday in the shooting that took place the previous day inside a residence in the 1600 block of Little Crow Avenue, near Spencer Street and Pebble Road.
Police said the firearm appeared to have come from within the home and no charges were expected to be filed.
The Clark County Coroner's office said Brooklyn Mohler of Henderson, was the person who died in the incident. A cause and manner of death was not immediately disclosed.
Clark County School District confirmed Mohler was a seventh grader at Schofield Middle School. A spokesperson said a letter was being sent to parents Wednesday regarding the incident.
"Brooklyn would be the last person on Earth that I would think that would be killed the way she was," said Mohler's classmate Breanna Booker. "She's so young and I think she would go onto eighth grade with all of us."
"When we were younger, we would always talk about her sweet 16," said Mohler's classmate Jessica Spalding. "How fun it would be to plan that and she's not going to have that."
Police said there were three juveniles, including the victim, inside the home when the teen was shot.
Neighbors FOX5 spoke with said there has been trouble at the home before.
"Two weeks ago cops came, and then about two weeks before that the cops came - it was more than one cop. It wasn't just a quick thing," neighbor Kelly Lincoln said.
Metro said the tragedy should serve as a reminder that gun safety needs to be a top priority for gun owners.
"Guns should be kept under lock and key at all times. Gun safes are the best bet so children don't have easy access to firearms," Sgt. Annette Darr said.
Metro wouldn't say if any adults were present at the home when the shooting occurred.
