Unknown Gunmen Stage Prison Break In Akure, Free Over 175 Inmates


Unknown gunmen numbering 50 have broken into the medium security Olokuta prison along Ondo road in Akure, Ondo state. The gunmen set 175 inmates free in a daring attack that took place around 12: midnight.

According to sources, the jail break has been linked to some unknown gunmen who invaded the Prison around 12 a.m. Reports however, say a large detachment of security agents, including the state Commissioner of Police, Patrick Dukumor are currently at the scene of the incident for immediate assessment of the incident.

 Some top government functionaries led by the state Attorney General and Commissioner for justice, Eyitayo Jegede were also at the prison this morning to assess the level of damage. Speaking to reporters, the comptroller of prison in the state, Tunde olayiwola said the incident happened at about 12;05am and
dispelled the rumour that the attack was carried out by Boko Haram insurgents..

 However, at press time, some of the escaped prisoners have already been arrested by security agents. Eyewitnesses said the gunmen freely used Improvised Explosive Devices to carryout out the jailbreak. It was not known as at the time of publishing this report if anyone was killed during the attack.
